A short ceremony will run from 9:00-9:45AM. Past national ASME president Victoria Rockwell will present the award. Her presentation will open a 9am-5pm Windmill Symposium at the Batavia Library including speakers such as: • Dr. T. Lindsay Baker, the preeminent expert on American windmills, will talk about the American windmill story, from the first patent through the decline of the industry in the early twentieth century, as well as Batavia’s significance in windmill history. • Christopher Gillis, of Frederick, Maryland, on the Aermotor Company of Chicago, developed by Thomas Perry while working in Batavia. • Batavia’s own Bob and Francine Popeck, of Batavia, Illinois, on the windmill factories' local economic impact There is no cost for the symposium; however reservations are required via the library’s website. ASME Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmarks are existing artifacts or systems representing a significant mechanical engineering technology. ASME has designated over 250 landmarks through its History and Heritage Landmarks Program since the program began in 1971. The Batavia Windmill Collection will be the 254th landmark nationwide.
