Presentation "Fusion Research"
May 18, 2016 6:30-8:00pm
At A Residential Home located at 2829 Marengo Ave, Altadena, CA
Description:
Mark F Connaughton is a Professional Engineer with thirty-five years experience in aerospace and commercial industries, a futurist and science fiction buff. He is currently working with a forward-looking company to bring the long-awaited nuclear fusion to life.
Nuclear energy has been used since the 1950s to provide electrical power. Fission reactors have been the first and easiest machines to make, and are still useful, but the inherent dangers and high costs of managing wastes an insuring safety have made it harder to maintain as time goes on. Using the simplest atoms to achieve atomic power has the virtue of creating no appreciable nuclear waste, with no run-away scenarios and no necessity for collecting and storing scarce or dangerous materials. The challenge is to produce conditions where fusion can occur, and this has been a quest for theoreticians and laboratories since the 1950s.
Mark is working for Tri Alpha Energy in Foothill Ranch. Founded by entrepreneurs and funded by private investors,
TAE is taking the engineering approach to the challenge: working our way up the scales of energy and confinement an inch at a time, with theoreticians and experimenters working side by side with apparatus that costs a tiny fraction of what the Tokamaks and other items of “big science” cost and yields tens of data points a day.
Mark will be presenting a brief review of the science and engineering efforts underway to bring this technology into use.

Los Angeles Section Meeting March 19, 2016
“Money, the Federal Reserve and Debt – PART II ”
At A Residential Home located at 2829 Marengo Ave, Altadena, CA.
March 16th , 2015 6:30 PM – 8:00 PM
Refreshment will be provided. On behalf of ASME LA chapter, special thanks to Nabil and Mary for their generosity to host the meeting at their resident.M
Part 1 (1/21/16) dealt with: What is Money? How it is created out of thin air, via bank loans and the Federal Reserve. I discuss the problem that interest payments to banks require money that is not created for that purpose. The money for interest is either taken from new loans to pay interest on old loans (a Ponzi scheme) or simply having the Fed print more money. The difference between wealth and money is discussed. Money in the Constitution is briefly discussed. Finally, the Federal debt is analyzed in detail. Several copies of the 2nd edition of Don's book on financial bubbles were handed out gratis.

Part 2 will deal with “The Federal Reserve System and Banks”. Don provides more in depth discussion of how this sector works.

Amelia Tee Qiao Ying
Hello there! My name is Amelia and I'll be moving to the LA area soon. I was part of the ASME chapter at my college (Georgia Tech) and am interested in joining the LA chapter once I graduate. Is there any way I can connect with the group? Thanks!
