Dear MED Member,In 2015, a National Science Foundation workshop was held in Portland, Oregon to identify emerging research needs for companies producing smart goods, i.e., the “things” in the internet of things (IoT). The final report is attached.
Findings include that the promise of IoT depends upon the ability of companies outside of the traditional information technology supply chain to assimilate wireless sensing capabilities within their products opening opportunities to develop advanced manufacturing technologies for integrating electronics into smart goods.
The workshop identified nine key knowledge gaps needed to address the common materials, design, manufacturing and educational challenges facing the emergence of an IoT industry.
