Dear Colleagues, This letter is to inform you of the NIST Reusable Abstractions of Manufacturing Processes Challenge. The goal of this challenge is to invite students, faculties, researchers, and manufacturers interested in submitting models of any manufacturing process and demonstrating application of the ASTM E3012-16 for characterizing Unit Manufacturing Processes (UMP) for information sharing and sustainability assessment. The goal is for these standardized models to be reused, extended, and modified for many applications including simulation and optimization. We envision a collection of the resultant models can be composed into system-level analysis that will have the potential to become great resources to facilitate and speed up models development that will benefit the manufacturing community. To reach a wider audience, we are asking you help spread the news to those who may be interested. For more information, visit: https://challenge.gov/challenge/ramp-reusable-abstractions-of-manufacturing-processes Thank you and we look forward to hearing from you. Swee Leong

Sponsored by the NSF Division of Civil, Mechanical and Manufacturing Innovation, the 2017 NSF CAREER Proposal Writing Workshop will be held April 3-4, 2017 in Portland, Oregon. The workshop will be co-hosted by Oregon State University, Kansas State University, and Texas A&M University. This workshop will cover the basics of CAREER proposal writing and review. It will include presentations by NSF Program Officers and recent CAREER awardees, a mock panel review using awarded and declined CAREER proposals, and a feedback session where small groups will review and discuss the draft CAREER proposal project summaries that each participant has prepared. Workshop participants are expected to read and review six CAREER proposals prior to the Workshop so that they can actively participate in mock panel reviews. These mock review panels are designed as a realistic simulation of actual CAREER proposal review panels. Participants will also have an opportunity to meet with current and previous NSF Program Officers.
Data from previous workshops suggest that the success rate of the participants is considerably higher than the overall NSF average. Correspondingly, this workshop attracts far more applicants than we can admit (approximately 250 participants will be selected to attend this workshop), so early application is strongly recommended. To provide sufficient time for interactions among participants and facilitators, mealtime activities will be an important activity on the agenda. A workshop fee of $250 will be charged to help defray the cost of workshop meals and materials.
The application deadline is January 9, 2017. The application procedure and tentative agenda for the workshop can be found at: http://www.ksu.edu/career. Please note that every participant is required to submit a project summary of their CAREER proposal and an NSF style biosketch as part of the application package.

Dear Colleague:
We are writing to invite contributions to a Special Issue of the International Journal of Computer Integrated Manufacturing (IJCIM) on "Cyber-Physical Product Creation for Industry 4.0".
Industry 4.0 has become a synonym for a vision of future product creation and production engineering environments in which networks of horizontally and vertically integrated smart design and manufacture systems will be the norm. With the Industrial Internet of Things and its Cyber-physical Systems as a backbone, game-changing new ways of product design and manufacture in a hyper-connected globalized world are emerging. In addition, a new and rapidly growing industrial service-sector focusing on Product-Service-Systems has begun to form. Some of the challenges in realizing the overall vison of Industry 4.0 concern the integration, management, control and communication of cyber-physical production engineering systems, the integration of state-of-the-art technology with legacy systems, data security and broader cyber-security aspects, as well as national and international public policy issues. Lastly, given the profound impact of this so-called 4th Industrial Revolution on society as a whole, the changing landscape of tomorrow’s job market and hence the training and education of the next generation workforce need to be addressed as well.
The objective of this special issue is to seek high quality and unpublished papers that advance research and thus the state-of-the-art in all facets of Cyber-physical Product Creation in the broader context of Industry 4.0. Contributions may include theoretical foundations, open technical challenges, innovative applications and implementations in industry, business case studies, experimental studies, associated design-and manufacture education initiatives, as well as outstanding review papers.
