Authors: David Warner, PE, Elbert Simon.  Published December 01, 2011

Amtrak By the Numbers is a comprehensive roster of Amtrak's passenger cars and motive power since its inception in 1971. The book serves as an unmatched record of equipment history that will benefit the serious historian, while the over 440 color photos will please casual observers. Further, the information in the book represents a history of developments in passenger cars and locomotives over the last 65 years, as Amtrak molded the fleet that serves it today. The fleet is covered in five main sections: Motive Power; Self-Propelled Cars and Trainsets; Steam- Heat Rolling Stock; Head-End Power Rolling Stock; and Auto Carriers, Mail, and Express Cars. State-owned equipment used on Amtrak services is also included. The tables are designed to enable readers to follow a particular piece of equipment “from cradle to grave” during its time on the railroad. www.amtrakbythenumbers.com contains updates to keep the book current, and provides access to an order form for autographed copies.
