In recent years, 3D printing has been making big splashes in the news as well as in the manufacturing industry with seemingly endless possibilities. Those who are creative but not in industrial manufacturing often wonder where the future of 3D printing is for recreational or small-business use.

ASME Northern Alberta Section is pleased to have Kyle Hermenean of Machina Corp present to us on recent developments in desktop 3D printing, and how 3D printing may trigger a paradigm shift in how we act as both consumers and producers in the marketplace.

Kyle Hermenean is the co-founder of Machina Corp., a company based in Alberta that manufactures 3D printers and focuses on bringing desktop 3D printing and rapid prototyping to the general public. He has a background in software development and has worked with numerous telecommunications companies.

*Note* Participants should be aware that the initial portion of this event is a tour of the University of Alberta Mechanical Engineering Machine Shop where they will be shown equipment that is not offered by Machina Corp.

 SolidWorks 2015 Features Overview


SolidWorks is one of the most widely used 3D CAD tool in the world. The software is constantly evolving with the needs of design and engineering professionals. Javelin is the Canadian provider of SolidWorks and related training and services. The ASME Northern Alberta Section is pleased to have Peter Kjellbotn from Javelin to provide a features overview of the latest edition of SolidWorks.

Mr. Kjellbotn is a Solutions Consultant with Javelin with a background in manufacturing and process engineering. He works closely with hundreds of companies in Alberta to provide solutions and guidance for mechanical and electrical designs and 3D printing.

In this presentation, we will cover the state of the CAD industry in Alberta, some of the new features in SolidWorks 2015, and future directions of SolidWorks. We will also touch upon the CFD and FEA Integration tools that have enabled Alberta companies to engineer better and more cost- effective products. Lastly, with the global trend towards cloud-based data storage and access, we will discuss the latest cloud-based initiatives in SolidWorks that improves work sharing and collaboration.
