DeepGulf 2010 Winner - Early Career Engineer Award Best Technical Content

Liang Yu, Ph.D. won the ASME-IPTI Quest Offshore Early Career Engineer Award for Best Technical Content at DeepGulf 2010.  The winning paper is titled "Collapse Resistance Modeling and Testing in Unbonded Flexible Pipe Employing Composite Materials".

Dr. Liang Yu is DeepFlex's Director of Product Technology and has been with the company for 2.5 years.  Dr. Yu received his Ph.D. in Structural Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 2006.  He had 2 years of experience in deepwater riser system analysis, design and monitoring before joining DeepFlex.  Since then he has been instrumental in the development of pipe prediction models including the proprietary pipe design, end fitting, gap spanning and stress anaylsis software.  He leads DeepFlex's reasearch and development efforts on maturing the innovative technology of Unbonded Flexible Fiber Reinforced Pipe (FFRP).  The challenges with designing and analyzing composite materials in flexible pipe are significantly different than steeel requiring a creative approach.  Dr. Yu has taken on this challenge and has expanded the capabilities of the analytical tools that predict the mechanical and physical properties of our cutting edge technology.  In addition to software development, Dr. Yu supports full scale test plans, material development, installation engineering and ancillary equipment design.  Mark Kalman, VP Eningeering notes"Dr. Yu has been instrumental in advancing the technology of our game changing solutions.  His leadership and creativity is what makes techology development at DeepFlex a stimulating experience."
