  • Mecklenburg Area Joint STEM Society Kickoff Meeting November 11

    November 2020 Meeting Notice

Meeting Summary: In November, we will be joining many of our fellow professional societies at the Mecklenburg Area Joint STEM Society Kick-off Meeting

November 11, 2020 (7:00 PM) – Virtual Meeting (please see Zoom information below)

Since our February 2020 meeting, we have been working together with area professional societies and schools to create what we believe is a unique and promising program to help all area students discover promising Science-Technology-Engineering-Mathematics (STEM) careers. Please join us to learn more about exciting changes in education and the role we can play in helping shape it.

Meeting Description: According to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, high schools in America are considered to be obsolete in today’s world. Schools are misaligned with employers in our constantly changing world as evidenced by millennials graduating from college in record numbers, while many remain unemployed/underemployed. At the same time, 7.5 million jobs remain unfilled before the pandemic, which leaves US businesses at a disadvantage globally. According to a recent Harvard / Berkley study, Charlotte ranks at the bottom of the 50 largest cities in the America on students experiencing economic and social mobility. The need to support our area schools has never been greater as our children’s future, as well as that of the country, is at stake.
As the schools’ “customer,” many businesses are taking an active role in working with the schools to provide learning experiences for the students to both excite them about their future and help guide them towards the best job opportunities. At the joint engineering society dinner in February 2020, we recognized that professional societies could play a key role in facilitating STEM programs in support of our employers on the one hand and our children on the other. We have been meeting monthly since then to form the Mecklenburg Area Joint STEM Society (please see attached flier) and are pleased to formally introduce the collaborative program to our membership at large. In addition to serving as a ready source of highly motivated and talented volunteers, we can also serve as ambassadors for our national societies who have a wealth of STEM related programs we can offer.

Meeting Keynote Speaker: Mike Realon, Career and Community Development Coordinator for Olympic High School, has kindly agreed to provide an overview of their nationally recognized STEM program. In 2010 Mike was recognized by the Microsoft Corporation as one of America’s top 10 most innovative high school educators for his work at Olympic. Olympic is immersed in employing National Academy Foundation (NAF) career academies, as well as project-based and experiential learning, to address the expanding American skills gap. Olympic’s five career academies have ALL received the rare and lofty national ranking from the National Academy Foundation as being “Distinguished”, and Olympic is only the 3rd High School in America to ever achieve this truly rare feat. (please see attached bio).
