International Pipeline Geotechnical Conference (IPG)

July 25-26, 2017

Lima, Peru

IPG 2017 will take place in Peru and be sponsored by TgP and will be co-sponsored by ARPEL.  https://arpel.org/

Visit the conference website for additional information: https://www.asme.org/events/ipg

The IPG conference is an international event to promote knowledge sharing, technological progress and international co-operation for advancing the management of natural forces impacting pipelines with the intent of protecting the public, environment, energy infrastructure assets and ensure safe and reliable operations.

The pipeline risk factors associated to natural forces such as:

  • Landslides and mass movement
  • Tectonics/seismicity – including fault crossings and liquefaction
  • Hydrotechnical – including river scour and channel migration
  • Erosion and upheaval displacement
  • Geochemical – including karst and acid rock drainage
  • Unique soil structure – including residual and sensitive soils
  • Desert mechanisms – including dune migration
  • Volcanic mechanisms
  • Freezing of unfrozen ground
  • Thawing of permafrost terrain

have become critical in the integrity management of pipelines due to the occurrence of failures causing loss of human life and damage to the environment. These risk factors are known as Geohazards resulting from natural processes of a geotechnical, geological, hydrological, or tectonic origin that represent potential threats usually induced during the pipeline construction and operations.

The suite of activities constituting geohazard management practice including: special design and construction; monitoring and inspection; risk assessment and associated data management have seen considerable advancements in recent years as the topic has gained prominence within the pipeline community

Authors are especially requested to consider the following three themes:

  1. 1. Geohazard Considerations for Design and Construction

 Pipeline Route Selection and Characterization

  • Special considerations for mountainous terrain
  • Design and installation of open-cut river crossings, trenchless crossings and river structures
  • Design and installation of slope stabilization and erosion control works
  • Other related practical topics including State of the Art methods

  1. 2. Geohazard Risk Assessment and Pipeline Integrity Management Planning

  • South American considerations leading to higher exposure to geohazards-induced pipeline integrity hazards: mountain ridge top construction, Amazonian terrain, residual soils, extreme rain rates, seismic activity and possibly others
  • A global inventory of geohazards leading to pipeline integrity hazards
  • Data sources and data management methods and systems
  • Risk assessment methodologies: assessment or probabilities of failure, consequence modeling and spill simulation, quantitative and prediction methods
  • Integrated approaches to system-wide geohazard management planning
  • Identification and Assessment of Geohazards on the right-of-way

  1. 3. Monitoring, Mitigation and Emergency Repairs

  • Development and utilization of monitoring technologies for unstable slopes, river channels, the effects of seismic activity and other geohazards: on-pipe, ILI, slope indicators, satellite monitoring, precise surveys and triangulation etc.
  • Practical examples of site-specific monitoring programs including the integration of the results of various monitoring methods leading to a decision to an operational intervention
  • Examples of analysis of monitoring results and correlations to forecast timing of operational interventions
  • Mitigation solutions
  • Other related practical topics including State of the Art methods

Authors are invited to submit papers in English as well as their native language. Presentations during the conference will be delivered in the author’s native language with simultaneous translation.
